>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, november 3rd. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. the sun was up at 6:38, setting at 5:08. the live doppler shows us we are clear to start out but the wind advisory still up in the north bay hills through tomorrow morning. it will be breezy above about

1,000 feet and then a few more clouds. 4s and 50s now but we will be in the 60s around the bay and inland noontime. 50s at the coast right on through the afternoon. partly cloudy, cooler and breezy today. we will look for the pattern to continue for the next day or so. but then more changes on the way. i'll have them coming up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. we begin this morning with developing news out of west oakland. firefighters have finally been able to put out a two-alarm fire an 11th street. it began around 6:30 this morning. officials say firefighters arrived and found flames coming out of the one-story building. the cause of that fire is now under investigation. . >> a shooting is being investigated. the person's identity has not been released. there's a suspect in custody. police say it appears the suspect and the vick similar two

each other. that shooting marks san jose's 39th homicide of the just one day after a fatal shooting at lax, a scare for passengers at sfo. police board a plane and escort a man off a jet blue flight. nick smith has this story that you will only see on abc7 news. >> he said if a plane is going to go down, this plane is going to be destroyed. >> that's what one passenger told us he overheard a man overhear him scream during a jet blue flight 1136. >> he said is so loud and buoyant, that he caught my attention. >> he spoke with the passenger, alex alexander, who caught part of the scary and confusing moments on my smartphone. >> my hands were shaky, my heart was racing. >> the flight was in route to sfo from long beach. patrick said as soon as the flight crew became aware of the threat, they called airport security who had police meet the

plane when it landed. take a look. officers board the plane and immediately identify and escort the passenger off the plane. >> why are you taking the guy off the plane and maybe the threat is still on the plane? and the rest of the passengers had to stay on board. >> the flight was delayed for about 45 minutes. officials have not identified the passenger and there have been no reports of injuries. at sfo, nick smith, abc7 news. now to the latest in the shooting at lax, gerardo hernandez is the first tsa agent to be killed in the line of duty. >> his sister said he was at the front counter checking passports when he was shot. he died from a gunshot wound to the chest. he's survived by his wife, son and daughter. this morning we are learning more about the suspect, 23-year-old unemployed mechanic paul ciancia. federal prosecutors have already

filed murder charges and he could face the death penalty. ciancia in is in the hospital and is unresponsive after he was shot in the head. here's david wright with the latest. >> the fbi said ciancia was dropped off at lax friday morning. in his bag a smith & wesson assault rifle like this one with five extra magazines fully loaded. the fbi alleges ciancia walked up to the tsa checkpoint and fired multiple shots at point-blank range at a tsa officers. >> in these circumstances, the defendant faces either maximum penalty of life without the possibility of parole, or the potential of the imposition of the death penalty. >> according to the complaint, as he moved up the escalator, he looked back at the wounded officer, who in video appearance to move, and returned to shoot

the officer again, killing him. ciancia then alleged by gunned down at least two more tsa officers. a chase through the terminal end at the food court near the boarding gates where airport police shot him four times. >> he made a conscious decision to kill multiple tsa employees. >> the fbi says the handwritten letter found in his bag erased any doubt about that. the fbi says the letter, signed by ciancia, addresses the tsa directly and says he intended to, quote, instill fear on your traitorious minds. the father of two found himself in the line of fire. his wife read a statement to reporters outside their home. >> i am truly devastated. we are all heartbroken and will miss him dearly. >> this morning those iconic pillars of light, the symbol of lax, 100 feet tall, are lit tsa

blue in honor of the slain tsa man. >> as of today all terminals and all airlines are back to normal operations here. but as you can imagine, for the phoenix who work here and the many traveling through, it's going to take a while to shake what happened. david wright, abc news, lax. >> this morning senator dianne feinstein paid tribute to the victims of the lax shooting while appearing on "face the nation." senator fine sign said she does not believe an assault weapons ban would get through congress. >> the weapon was a .223 mp-15 where the mp stands for military and police. clearly designed not for general consumption, but through practice now general consumption. same gun that was used at aurora. would i do a bill? i'm sure i would do a bill. i believe this down deep in my solis. >> do you think there's any way such a bill would pass?

>> no, i don't. >> feinstein said she believes there is what she calls a hammerlock on congress by the gun owners and gun people. the los angeles airport shooting has caused dozens of cancellations and delays in the bay area. there's been a ripple effect each though it occurred on friday. check with your airline. >> all lanes in richmond 580 are open this morning following a fatal crash. authorities say a pedestrian was struck and killed just before 10:00 last night as he tried to run across the interstate near harbor way. an alert was issued a half-hour later while the chp investigated. it was lifted about 1:00 this morning. no word yet on the identity of the word who was killed. the incident remains under investigation.

the chp is investigating the cause of a fatal crash near stinson beach yesterday. one person was killed after a car went off a cliff on highway 1 just before 4:30 p.m. that car, a red honda, had been reported stolen out of vallejo. the driver, who was killed, was the only person in the car. friends and family of a santa rosa teenager who was shot and killed by a sonoma county sheriffs deputy gathered to thank the community for their support. 13-year-old andy lopez was shot on the 22nd holding an air rifle that looked like an ak-47 assault rifle. abc7 news reporter has the latest from santa rosa. >> reporter: as candles were arranged and a cross was adjusted for the growing memorial for 13-year-old andy lopez, it was not lost on a few people here that this day marks the day of the dead. >> it's a tradition that every

1st and 2nd of november you come and celebrate the dead, or the loved ones of that passed away. >> andy lopez' parents were here a couple of hours. they left just before sunset. they did not want to speak on camera, but they said they will be in san francisco on monday for a big announcement. they will be joining their team of attorneys monday to announce a federal civil lawsuit against the sonoma county sheriff's department. organizers said they had no intention of connect being the death to this day, they just wanted to be here with the lopez family. >> everyone wants to be here remembering andy. that's all it is. we don't want it talk about what happened to andy or anything like that. we just want to remember him. >> a lopez family attorney said the 13-year-old has not been laid to rest because his parents have been waiting for his grandmother to arrive from mexico. she arrived in california just in time to join them for the neighborhood event. in santa rosa, abc7 news.

san jose police are searching for a man that was missing since friday. he was last seen 3:30 on friday. conseco has a previous head injury that has left him mentally disabled. he walks with a limp and he has a cane. he's described as 5'8", 140 pounds with black hair and a beard. he was last seen wearing a black jacket, white t-shirt, black pants and flip-flops. in almeda county, sixteen agers have been rescued before getting lost hiking on mission peak regional preserve. they say they got to the top of the peak and lost the trail heading back. >> we got on the wrong route so then we tried backtracking, but then it started getting dark and we lost the trail and we ended up in the field so we called the cops and here we are. >> the east bay regional park police got a 911 call relayed

>> welcome back, everyone. >> hillary clinton isn't even running for president yet, but she's already picked up a key endorsement. democratic senator chuck schumer of new york is backing her. he's joined a chorus of other democrats urging hillary to run. schumer announced his backing at an annual dinner last night. clinton said she's still considering her options.

other potential candidates include vice president joe biden and new york governor andrew cuomo. >> more than a year after 17-year-old trayvon martin was fatally shot by watch volunteer george zimmerman, the city where it happened, sanford, florida, is rolling out a revamped neighborhood watch program. the sanford police department will outline the changes tuesday during a community meeting. revisions include restricting volunteers from carrying firearms, and from pursuing suspects. zimmerman was acquitted of a second degree murder charge back in july. the cal palace in daly city is expected to be packed again today with people attending one of the country's biggest gun shows. it's sponsored by the crossroads of the west. organizers say they do everything by the book and gun owners appreciate it. >> they won't even let me get a 30 round for my a.r. or nothing. and they ain't even selling 30

rounds in there, it's 10 rounds. everything is california legal in there, so why not? >> we have a huge population of shooters out here and we need a venue to go in and buy the things we need to buy, and i don't see any reason why we can't do it here on state property. >> this weekend show is the first since governor jerry brown vetoed a bill that would have banned all gun shows at that venue. >> if you take your electronics with you when you fly, a big change is ahead. pretty soon you are not going to be told to turn them off before take-offs and landings. that rule has been in place for some 37 years because of fierce the devices would interfere with aircraft electronics. now the federal aviation administration is look to listing those restrictions. here's david loui with the change.

>> >> reporter: virgin america just released the new safety video but the admonitions to turn off devices soon will be moot. devices can stay on during and before landing as long asner airplane mode. making calls will still be band. we asked them via skype why it took so long for the faa to change the rules? >> the faa is a very conservative organization. safety always comes first. but now we are at the point the devices are safer, the technologies on the airplanes are safer and the way the airplanes are built makes it more possible. >> each airline must submit it's device plan for regulation. the rule may not be instantaneous. an estimated two-thirds of passengers carry mobile phones or smartphones on board and 40% have tablets. what the faa didn't make clear is whether video calls using the internet can be used while on airplanes. >> most of the airplanes can't support video chat, whether it's facetime or other video

services. so if you use that, you slow down the experience for everybody. and on some systems you may even be booted off. >> one passenger wonders if more devices will be carried on board? >> who knows what the next thing for kids will be. it could be noisier on the plane. >> there are two exceptions to the new rules. laptops still need to be turned off before takeoff and landing and in low visibility landing the crew may ask for all devices to be shut off. in san jose, david loui, abc7 news. >> on tuesday the san jose city council is expected to take up a firearms ordinance to deal with a wild pig problem. feral pigs have done thousands of dollars of damage to the greens at the golf and country club. they are also tearing up the lawns of neighbors. san jose does not allow guns to be fired within city limits, except by police or at firing ranges. this proposed ordinance would include pig trappers, which

would allow them to kill the animals within the city. >> happening now, an estimated 4,000 runners are hitting the streets of san francisco for the u.s. half-marathon. that race kicked off at 7:00 this morning. you are taking a live look at the golden gate bridge, which is part of the route. here's what the bridge looked like about an hour ago from our golden gate bridge cam. you can see those runners there. and to accommodate them the bridge's east sidewalk was closed for several hours but has since reopened. the west sidewalk is set to reopen in just a few minutes at 9:30. so dry, but breezy for those runners, lisa? >> definitely. that's transporting the cooler, dryer air mass. we can't get rid of the dry. that's the operative word n november we would expect and we need some rain. live doppler 7hd picking up the cloud cover here. these are higher clouds that will be with us make for a

partly cloudy skies around parts of the bay. right now we still have a lot of sunshine and temperatures are on the cool side. here's mt. tam. everyone is in the 50s except for napa. last check 55 san carlos, san francisco in the mid-50s as well as half moon bay. some big swells forming there. golden gate bridge, a nice-looking shot there. napa 57 and livermore fairfield coming up through the 50s. we will be look at the gusty winds throughout the afternoon. so it has been a little bit cooler in spots over into the east bay, but with the wind in our north bay, it has allowed for some pretty good mixing and the atmosphere has stayed relatively mild. that's why we have the 50s to start out. but the afternoon everyone will be fairly uniform with much cooler than average temperatures. not much, but cooler than what we've had been. so no 70s out there. and still below normal. so the wind advisory through

9:00 in the north bay hills, this is through monday. we will stay breezy all throughout the day tomorrow, as well. cool conditions and we will look for a little bit of warming to come our way midweek. so here is a look at the hilltop wind gusts. up to 25 miles an hour in knoxville streak and atlas creek and in the south bay. we are looking at wind gusts of 24 miles an hour. so with the breezy winds, we will have the coastline awfully windy today. northwest winds along the san mateo coast, up to 20 miles an hour. it looks to be pretty breezy over mt. diablo, as well, if you are headed outside for a bike ride keep that in mind. the cool temperatures, though, are going to stay with us for a while. in fact, we could wake up to some frost tomorrow morning tuesday morning. the rest of the day look for the vail of high clouds from time to time and the breezy winds. in particular we are look at temperatures just in the mid-60s manufacture milpitas. and 64 in menlo park.

57 in pacifica. san francisco you were cool yesterday due to all the fog that lingered throughout much of the morning. this afternoon, though, we will call it partly to mostly cloudy in the low 60s. north bay numbers 58 stinson and 64 petaluma. here's the gustier winds. oakland, as well as fremont and castro really. you head in planned not much warming. just a couple degrees for 67 in pleasanton. the accuweather seven-day forecast then, cool today, tomorrow. some warming tuesday and wednesday. still dry. increasing clouds. doesn't look like we will see rain from this system. another system may poise -- is poised off the coast over the weekend and that could bring us rain. we will have to wait and see. abc whether news has another weather resource for you on twitter. every time it gets toe promising, we get excited.

>> knew this morning a rare solar eclipse spread across the world this morning. some areas witnessed a total blackout. in other areas such as the east coast it appeared as only a partial solar eclipse during sunrise. it was not visible at all from the bay area. >> police in salinas are looking for someone who put lsd in a piece of halloween sandy, sending a woman to the hospital. authorities believe a small hole in a snickers wrapper is where a needle was used to inject the acid. you see the hole right there. the woman ate the candy thursday night while trick-or-treating with her children. she immediately felt she was having an anxiety attack. the candy had been given to the woman's 16-month-old daughter. >> with that kind of strength i almost shutter to think what would have happened to my niece. it would have been far too strong a dosage for a toddler.

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the whether with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. we've had breezy north winds. here's a look at the winds all around the bay area. you will notice they are gusting to 20 miles an hour half moon bay, nearly 30 miles an hour santa rosa, novato and napa with calmer winds in the east bay. partly cloudy skies with the cool air mass filtering into the bay. that allows temperatures to stay just in the 50s at the coast. mid-60s around the bay. and about the same inland. so not a big temperature spread. temperatures fairly uniform. this does last for another day or so. then we will look for a moderation. a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. >> thanks, lisa. >> happening now, the new york city marathon is underway. more than 47,000 participants are flooding city streets today for the 43rd running of the marathon.

the event was cancelled at the last minute last year due to super storm sandy. officials say the boston marathon bombing in april has resulted in increased security, particularly near the finish line in central park. german officials say they would love to go to russia to question edward snowden. germany wants to know exactly how extensive the spying of the national security agency was. berlin officials also want snowden to show them the original documents the former nsa analysts has leaked. records show the u.s. has spied on leaders of 35 countries, including german's chancellor, angela merkel. >> one of the original mercury 7 astronauts has been laid to rest. scott carpenter, seen here on the far left, died from complications of a stroke. he was 88.

john glenn, another mercury astronaut, was among the mourners yesterday. he was the second american to orbit the earth, and later had a successful career as an aquanaut. much has been written about the new subsidized insurance rates under obamacare. but equally important is the free care that's now available to many more people under med e cal, the state's version of medicaid. michael finney tells us what it takes to qualify. >> nora is get hearing blood sugar level checked. this preventative care is something she might not have done in the past. >> i couldn't afford it. this is really, you know, caused a lot of problems in the family because it's not only me, it's my family, my husband, my kids and my grandson. >> nora is one of an estimated 2 million new patients in california who are now eligible for med-i-cal under the affordable care act. it used to be limited for those under the poverty level.

that was for families. for a family of four that's $23,050 or less a year. now med-i-cal has been expanded to include adults without children and a family of four would qualify if it had an annual income of less than $32,500. brenda shipp is the chief operating officer for lifelong medical care has 15 health clinics around the bay area. >> this is huge. this is really, really huge. i mean, because there are a lot of people who have not had any way of accessing care at all. >> she said in the past those without health insurance were forced to go to much more expensive emergency rooms where, by law, everyone must be treated. >> so a lot of those people will now be eligible for some type of insurance to help them. mainly med-i-cal. >> to determine your eligibility go to a community health clinic or contact "cover california" through it's website or hotline.

those who don't qualify may qualify for subsidized health insurance through covered california. >> now i really happy because through the med-i-cal i will have everything. basically everything that the affordable care act has. >> about 26 states, including texas and florida, have decided not to expand their medicaid insurance programs. the u.s. supreme court upheld the legality of the affordable care act, but said the expansion of medicaid is optional. to determine your qualification, under either program, i have a link to the covered california website. go to abc7news.com. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. some athletes are now turning down the thermostat to help them recover from their workout. they are using a new technology called full body cryotherapy

which employs ultracold to affect the body. science reporter carolyn johnson has the details. >> it may look like a sauna but it's actually the reverse. a super cold treatment known as cryotherapy. >> it's an advanced version of an ice pack. the co-owner said the treatment originated in japan in the 1970 for rheumatoid arthritis. clients spend two or three minutes in a cryosauna that takes skin temperatures down to 30 degrees fahrenheit. so cold that they wear protective clothing. >> gloves, socks, underwear and earmuffs. >> like standing outside in the snow with shorts and a tank top on. this woman said it helped her get back to competition after a torn hamstring. and this woman said it allowed her to return to exercise, despite arthritis. >> i'm able to do my water arobics and yoga. >> cold has become a hot topic in sports medicine. some experts now believe

lowering an athlete's body immediately after exercise can speed up recover and lessen the pain often associated with exercise. but the biology is complicated and there's debate over how different methods of cooling actually effect the body. this physical therapist has worked with the cryotherapy chamber and said he's seen results. >> we really want to get all that inflammatory processing going and get it moving along and getting it out. with the cold it really does that. >> others are more cautious. craig heller, stanford biologist, helped develop a device that drains heat from the palms of athletes' hands, called core control. they are gloves and they are now being commercialized. he said ice baths can also accomplish some of the same benefits, but he's skeptical of the short period of time used in the cryotherapy sauna. >> just a few minutes in very cold air or gas is not going to do much to lower your body

temperature. >> he does believe the reaction to the short bursts of cold will undoubtedly produce a shock to the system, and supporters believe the body's reaction to that stimulus alone also produce as benefit. >> the body interprets that as pain, so to counteract it it releases endorphins. >> according to the company website, the cryosauna has not been evaluated by the fda and the agency doesn't offer any advice on it's use or effectiveness. carolyn johnson, abc7 news. >> carolyn said the cost per treatment ranges from 25 to $65, depending on the number of sessions purchased. >> ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news, you could buy a -- a longstanding tradition gets underway in initial kicking off the season. out of these clouds because this will just really inhibit the solar radiation from time to time today. and we will look for partly cloudy skies, even full sunshine at times. they are passing through, not harming anyone. we will be looking at the cool temperatures. the air mass is even dryer than it was. the view from mt. tam. we had a little wind earlier. still the winds will be with us through the next couple of hours. the national weather service may drop that wind advisory in the north bay hills. but temperatures are all in the mid-50s right now with the well-mixed atmosphere. it hasn't allowed us to cool off that much. for a short period of time in napa we were down to 35 degrees. here's a look from our sutro tower camera. notice temperatures ranging from the 50s and even 60. breezy winds in the delta and sacramento valley. even the sierra nevada. the wind gusts allowing for a slightly warmer start to the day, around half moon bay and the airport. but out boo the east bay it's a

little bit cooler. in the afternoon will follow suit with cooler conditions. you see the higher clouds here in san jose. wind advisory for the next few hours in the north bay hills. it will remain breezy throughout the afternoon today and tomorrow. the temperatures just below the average. we should see about 70 for the high end north and south end of the bay. just shy of that today. san francisco and along the coast it will be pretty windy and cool. warmup comes our way, whether you like it or not we are talking midweek. and then our next chance of rain, maybe next weekend. we thought we could see some rain on thursday. doesn't look like one is bogey to happen. wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour. knoxville creek, 20 miles an hour. atlas a little breezy and down around the south bay and higher elevations. keep that in mind if you are headed out. a cool couple days. northwesterly days allows for the cooler air mass to settle in. the mornings will be quite chilly. this afternoon featuring a few

more clouds around. tomorrow will be nice and sunny. but as we take you through hour by hour you will notice by 3:00, 4:00, we are looking at partly cloudy skies, breezy, cool and the temperatures throughout the day today across the state even taking a hit with this cooler air mass. just 49 tahoe, 59 monterey, 50s common along the shoreline with numbers across the pay in the mid-60s today. 65 in fremont with mid-60s up in napa. 67 antioch. if you are headed over to oakland for the raiders today, about 60 at 1:00. then low 60s, breezy with sunshine. accuweather seven-day forecast, little change until midweek. that's the warmup. then a cool down with extra clouds and perhaps rain by next weekend were we will have to wait it out. >> i agree, we need the rain. our director, jerry, said if it were 70 and raining, that would be hawaii. >> we love it here. >> thanks, lisa. up next, a ride through history.
